France and teaching are a big part of who I am.
Actually, one language, in particular, fascinated me: German. So imagine my excitement when I found out that I would go on a 3 month exchange to Germany when I turned 16. It was like a dream. And yet, nothing went as planned.
My life took a turn on that trip to Germany. I was shy and quiet but was confident because I knew the vocabulary. I hadn't practiced much in real-life situations but hey, the carefree nature of youth would help me!
Unfortunately, the reality shock was terrible. I couldn't connect with the people around me because I didn't understand anything the Germans were saying 😔
My German wasn't bad, but I was missing something: the practice and the confidence to speak in real-life situations.
That’s when I realised that today’s teaching method isn’t the right one. Learning grammar, conjugation, vocabulary is necessary.
